What is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational therapy, often abbreviated as “OT”, is an applied science and health profession providing
treatment to help people achieve and maintain independence in all areas of their lives, or things that “occupy”
their time. For children that means helping them perform daily life tasks, such as going to school (handwriting,
visual perception, cognition), moving through their environment (fine and gross motor coordination),
processing sensory input, being part of a family (play, emotional and social skills), and self care skills
(dressing, bathing, eating).
What is Sensory Processing Disorder?
Sensory processing refers to the way the nervous system takes messages from the senses and the world
around you and turns that information into a response. Sensory Processing Disorder or SPD (previously called
Sensory Integration Dysfunction) is a neurological disorder in which the sensory information that the individual
perceives results in abnormal responses. People with SPD frequently get misinformation or misinterpret the
sensory feedback they receive. This frequently leads to difficulty functioning in daily life tasks.
